RE: Need assistance in picking a Toad

The Suzuki XL-7 is a great choice. Only the 4x4 model is flat-towable.

RE: Grants Pass to Gold Beach along the Rogue River

Highway 62 South, from Crater Lake, to Highway 234 towards Gold Hill is fine and there is a lot of good scenery. A short little jaunt up Interstate 5 to Grants Pass, and then 199 will take you all the way to Crescent City, CA and the coastal Redwoods - also very scenic. You can work your way back up the Oregon coast from there, or cruise down to Redwood National Park. There is so much to see in that area - I hope you have plenty of time!

Fire Could Close Highway 198 in Sequoia Today

Last night officals reported that parts of highway 198 running through Sequoia National Park might be closed today because of fire fighting operations to contain the Hidden Fire which has been burning in the area since September 10th. For the latest updates on the fire, see InciWeb. The latest webcam images are available from the USGS.

RE: Bodega Dunes Campground, CA

I've got an aerial photo on my site that shows how far it is from the campground to the beach. I don't remember which site we got, but I think it was around 5063 to 5073 - definitely on the inside of that loop. It was really private - the fire ring and picnic table were back in the trees, behind the pad. You couldn't even see it from the road. I don't think we ever saw a ranger or host when we were there, but that was in February of 2007.
Good luck!

RE: Ipod interface

If you pull the engine cover off, you can see the Left and Right RCA cables hanging down behind the radio. There will probably be a an identical set for another pair of speakers, but all of the cables should be marked.

RE: xantrex fredom 458

It might make some wavy lines across the TV screen - ours did. It wasn't bad, though. It will be fine for the computer and cell phone, although it would be more efficient to use a 12V vehicle charging cable for the cell phone (you're always better off using straight 12V, when you can). The 50 amp charger rocks; it would bring our 2 6V's back up to around 90% in 1.5 to 2 hours, using a generator. It also has some conditioning logic that keeps the batteries up-to-snuff, if you can keep your RV plugged-in all the time. There's no effective way to run the AC off an inverter; you need a generator for that.

RE: xantrex fredom 458

If you have a microwave, the 1000w is probably too small. We used the 1,500W Freedom with 2 6V's in our TT and it was a great setup. If the microwave's not an issue, than that 1,000W will be great!
Good luck!

RE: leveling jacks on class c

They're not necessary Don, but they sure are nice! We would put them on ours in a heartbeat, but we did necessary (not just nice) suspension upgrades first, then we got one of our cars all setup to tow. Finally, we upgraded the electrical system with batteries and an inverter (we mostly dry camp). Those were all $2k to $3k upgrades, about the same as hydraulic levelers. I'd like to think we might get to it next year, but we're coming up on time to do the brakes, seals and all that other "dirty" stuff, so I'm not sure.
good luck!

RE: 06 Ford Expedition

We towed a 6,000lb. trailer with our 2003 Expedition all over the west coast with no problems. Had we stuck with that combination, I would have replaced the tires with LT's to stiffen it up, a bit. Like kknowlton says above, I would recommend going much heavier than this.
good luck!

RE: Clear as mud

Some of the beaches, like Morro Strand, have a 24' limit (or less). We camped with a 26' TT all over NorCal and never had a problem. Our current rig is a little over 27 feet long, with a slide, and we still don't have any problems. We only camp at the county/state/federal parks.
good luck!

RE: Stopped up Quickie Flush

Wow, first time I've heard of that. It's held on by 3 (if I remember correctly) self-tapping screws and the flange is sealed to the tank with silicon. After removing the screws, use a hair-dryer to soften the silicon and you should be able to pry the old one out. You might try to work some fishing line under the flange (a couple pieces of dowel for handles), to cut through the silicon, before trying to pry it up with a screwdriver.
good luck!

RE: I-5 in January

We have never had to chain-up, over Christmas/New Years - although it was real close last year (just beat a big storm by a day). You are going to have to be prepared for anything, from Redding to Roseburg. Two years ago we crested the Siskiyou summit on August 30th and it was sleeting.
good luck!

RE: Onan Exhaust Fumes at the Wrong Time

Shoot! Can you post a picture of where the Onan exhaust comes out? One reason I have not sprung for a Genturi is that I'm worried exhaust fumes would come back down through the vents.

RE: picked up a Yamaha EF2400iS generator locally for $600

Sweet deal! Yes, I always thought ours was a bit loud, too. Not obnoxiously loud, but not something that you want to have running while you're sitting around the campfire.

RE: Crater Lake

I prefer to setup camp once, so I'd be inclined to go straight to Diamond Lake. Natural Bridge is a few miles south of Union Creek on Hwy. 62 - definitely worth seeing. A little further south, at the Prospect access road, are a couple of nice water falls; Mill Creek Falls and Barr Creek Falls.
Have a good time!
